Who We Are and What We Do

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also known as the Ontario Humane Society, is a registered charitable organization operating on the principle that no one has the right to cause physical or mental pain or suffering to any animal.

The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Hilary Weston, is our patron.  We are a member of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and the World Society for the Protection of Animals.  We are also affiliated with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in England.

The Brant County Shelter was built in 1969 and we have been providing a shelter for animals ever since.

We accept unwanted pets and attempt to relocate them in new, loving homes.

We provide canine control for the City of Brantford.

Most of the animals available for adoption are strays that have not been claimed by their owners.

Cruelty and Neglect

  • We will investigate all complaints received regarding animals that may be in distress.

Bylaw Enforcement

  • Provincial Offence Officers enforce bylaws in the City pertaining to animals.  This does NOT include barking dogs which is a violation of the Anti-Noise Bylaw that is enforced by the police department.

Ambulance Service

  • For a fee, we will provide transportation of an animal to a Vet clinic at the request of the owner.

Assisting Police

  • Drug related incidents, car accidents, and the incarceration of animal owners.

Humane Education

  • Presentations in schools, service clubs, children's clubs, day camps and tours of the shelter.

Pet Therapy

  • Retirement and nursing homes.
