Q.
Why do we charge for adoptions rather than give the animals away for free?
A. The revenue
generated by adoptions, offsets the expense of feeding and sheltering
animals and it is a fact that a monetary outlay,
increases responsibility and
decreases spontaneous adoptions.
Q.
How long do we keep animals before they are euthanized?
A. Stray dogs are kept
for a five day period to give the owner the opportunity to claim
the dog. Stray cats are kept for a three day period. If the animals
are not claimed, then they are transferred for adoption if
the health, temperament, and age is
acceptable. There is no set time
that the animals are kept for adoption. They are
monitored on a daily basis to determine how
well they are adapting. The availability
of cages is also a determining factor.
Q.
Why do we euthanize healthy animals?
A. Unfortunately, there
are just too many animals. We adopt as many as we can, but
there are always more animals coming in than
people wanting to adopt. We believe
this is more humane than letting an animal
roam wild, fending for itself, facing the
possibility of starvation, injury, disease,
being poisoned, shot, or physically abused.
Q.
Why is there sometimes sickness in a shelter?
A. There are many viral
diseases which can be brought into a shelter by stray dogs and
cats. Animals that wander the streets
face a high risk of contracting a disease and
can bring viruses and bacteria into the shelter.
A sheltered animal is under stress.
This weakens its immune system making it more
susceptible to infection. Owners
sometimes knowingly leave unhealthy animals
at the SPCA.

charity, we are dependant on donations, legacies, and fundraising to
continue
our service to the community. When donating, please specify the Brant
County Branch. A tax receipt will be issued for all donations received.
